“Borovitsa” dam
“Borovitsa” dam The dam is built on Borovica river which is a 41.5km long tributary of Arda river. It was constructed for the water supply of the town of Kardzhali and the villages around. The wall of the dam is earthfill and the biggest of that type in Bulgaria. It has an interesting spill-way – a big funnel followed by a tunnel to lead the water outside the wall. The land around the dam is fenced, fishing and swimming are prohibited. The area is very picturesque and over the wall is passing the road to Bezvodno village and Chiliyaka peak. Along the banks of Borovica river can be seen many rare and protected birds like wheaters, herons, imperial eagles, peregrine falcons and others.
