Medieval fortress close to Pchelarovo village
Medieval fortress close to Pchelarovo village It is situated in the Gradishteto area around 5km north of the village. It is close to the road to Haskovo and shortly after the turn-off for the villages of Petlovo and Mineralni bani. The place was researched in 1967-1968. The fortress has elliptical shape with diameters 22m and 75m. The wall width varies between1.2m and 1.5m. The remains of a tower with a diameter of 3.4m could be seen at one of the corners. In the southern part of the ellipse is located a small building where a bronze cross was discovered (supposedly the building was a chapel). No remains of buildings inside the fortress were found. It is proved that the wall was built over very old cultural layer dated 3500B.C. In the area outside the fortress are registered other archeological sites (a medieval necropolis near the river, foundations of a monastery, ancient road and others). The fortress is designated as a cultural monument with local significance. Note: The place is easily accessible and nice for tourism.
