Veikata peak
Veikata peak This is the highest peak in the Bulgarian part of the Gumurzhiyski snejnik elevation. It is 1463m high and is also the southernmost point of Bulgaria. There are two approaches to the peak. One is from Chakalarovo village. Next to the bridge at the end of the village a cart road should be followed for 1.5h to reach the ex-frontier post. Two more hours of walking along the frontier track and the peak is reached. Another approach is from Dolno Kapinovo village. There is a cart road at the end of the village close to the left frontier post that is passable with an off road car. It leads to the renovated mountain cottage “Hvoinova polyana” (the distance is around 4km). One option is to follow the cart road beginning close to the cottage till it combines with the path along the ridge of the mountain to the peak. The other option is to set out on the road located under the cottage. After around 40min down the hill, the frontier track is reached up to the peak. It takes around two and a half hours to reach the peak from the cottage. The view from the peak is amazing. At clear sky could be seen most of the neighboring Greece, the White Sea, town of Portolagos and others. The approach to the peak includes passing through virgin oak and mixed forests. Note: The place is suitable for tourism. There is a designated route from Chakalarovo village.
