The European holly tree (Ilex aquifolium), Chakalarovo village The European holly tree is an evergreen shrub or tree that is not typical for the local flora. It is included in the Bulgarian Red Data book of rare species. It occurs in Strandzha mountain, Middle Rhodopes, Sredna gora, Belasica. In 1972 in the Eastern Rhodopes in the area of Chakalarovo village was found a new field of holly tree. In 1980 it was designated as protected with area of 1 decare. At that time the trees were 3m high and with diameter around 22sm. In 2003 the land of the field is included in the territory of the protected area Gumurdjiski snejnik. In the yard of an abandoned house in the village could be seen a rarely big holly tree with height of 7m. Every year it gives small red fruits. Note: The tree could be visited when passing through the village heading to Veikata peak.
