Protected site “Sredna Arda”
Protected site “Sredna Arda” It was also designated as a protected site in 2000 with area of 420ha in the land of the villages Zvezdelina and Visoka polyana. Its location on the left bank of “Studen kladenec” dam reveals a wonderful sight to beautiful rocks, pastures and shrubs. The difficult to access rocks are preferred home for many birds’ species: black stork, eurasian hobby, Egyptian vulture, goshawk. Seven birds’ species typical for the Mediterranean region occur in “Sredna Arda”: black-eared wheater, subalpine wabler, masked shrine, blue rock trush, olive tree wabler, black-headed bunting, rock nuthatch. The vegetation is mesophitic with representatives of some endemic and relict species like Ha-berlea rhodopensis, Anthemis auriculata, Carduus thracicus and others. As a result of tectonic process at the foot of the rock formations are shaped many cracks, nich-es and relatively shallow and dry caves. They are inhabited by big bats’ colonies. Traces of an-cient life can be seen in some of the caves. Note: It is nice place for tourism, taking into account the laws for protected territories.
