“Oreshari” protected territory
“Oreshari” protected territory It encompasses area of 550 decares in the land of Oreshari village. Its designation as protected territory aims the conservation and protection of many rare, protected plant and animal species, rocks, archeological sites and caves. The popular “Popmartinovata” cave also known as “The Arc” is located in the protected territory. The area is full with picturesque carst forms in limestone terrain. The registered caves are rich in cave fauna along with traces of ancient life. The flora variety is amazing with xero-phitic vegetation and areas of mesophitic oak forests. It has many rare, endemic and relict plant species written in the Bulgarian Red Book including: european yew (Taxus baccata), Adrianthum cappilus-veneris, Lathraea rhodopea, Fritillaria pontica, wild sage (Salvia verbenaca), Ononis adenotricha and Oananthe millefolia. Key animal species include the rare lizard Lacerta trilineata, the frog Rana dalmatina and many bird species – cirl bunting and black-headed bunt-ing, black stork, Egyptian vulture, alpine swift and others. The territory was designated as protected in 1999.
